µTon.AV has a visual and a musical part. Pammela produces all the visual content. For the introduction she uses a usb microscope to display extreme close-ups of her face, hands and arms. She creates manipulable three dimensional models of the human body, these are used as raw elements. Effects are added in real-time. There are principal and secondary lightings, these are controlled by an application that allows Pammela to chose a color from the chromatic circle, and assign it to the primary lighting, the complimentary color is automatically assigned to the secondary lighting. The movement and the manipulation of these objects are performed by a sequencer synchronized to the music via MIDI. Pammela created all of the previously mentioned tools with QuartzComposer. As control surfaces, she makes use of Korg NanoKontrol, Novation Lauchpad and MIMO touchscreen.
For the music, Rafael uses Logic Pro as a loop sequencer to improvise continuously evolving microtonal music. He created an application with Processing to better integrate his Evolution UC-33 MIDI controller with Logic and to enable him to operate the program exclusively with it, a Novation Launchpad and a MIMO touchscreen. He has access to nine virtual instruments and some effects. He uses seven synthesizers and two samplers. The synthesizers produce the harmonic, melodic and percussion parts. One sampler is loaded with atmospheric effects, vocal samples (from Pammela and himself) and sound effects, while the other one is loaded with percussion sounds made with his mouth. The MIDI controller allows him to chose an instrument, have access to its synthesis parameters, channel strip and effects. When an instrument is chosen, he can record a sequence or delete an already existing one. The Novation Launchpad is used as a microtonal keyboard that provides visual feedback of all the running sequences via its programmable LEDs. The MIMO touchscreen is used to control the drum synthesizer's step sequencer. Every sound, even the drum sounds, are programmed by Rafael. Synthesizer sounds are the product of subtractive and FM synthesis. The samples are completely original and recorded by Rafael. He uses very simple sounds as the basis for the creation of more complex sounds during the improvisation. The microtonal tuning is a design of Rafael, it has 18 "semitones" and is called RM18.
